The recent win by Maurice Blackburn will see Australian born children released from detention centres.[1] The Government’s latest statistics, dated 28 February 2015, reveal:[2]

  • 133 children are held in immigration detention facilities within Australia;
  • 107 children are held in detention on Nauru;
  • 1,544 children are detained in the communityunder residence determinations, a system referred to as community detention; and
  • 2,499 children are living in the community on bridging visas which mean their parents generally have no work rights and very limited access to any Government support. [3]


There are now calls for an apology amidst the allegations that led to the removal of ten- Save the Children staff from Nauru.[4] Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has announced a review will be conducted to fully investigate the matter.
